The Scarlet Cord

A scarlet cord - as catchy as its name is, it is actually a rope or string with striking red or reddish orange colour. It summons attention through its visibility. And maybe most of us are familiar with its relation to a woman in the Bible named Rahab. We may have read the story once, twice or maybe many more times than others but with the familiarity of the story, there is a truth that maybe only a handful of us really do capture.

Rahab was a prostitute when Joshua sent two spies to search the land and Jericho in particular. When their identities were unraveled, Rahab hid them and lied when the king sought their arrest. In exchange, Rahab sought protection when the Israelites enter the land. The scarlet cord was tied on her window to symbolize the commitment of the spies and the assurance of protection over Rahab and her family (Joshua 2).

This story bear resemblance to the blood smeared on the doorposts at the first Passover during Moses' time in Egypt, which was a sign of safety and protection. Fast forward, this story is also a symbol of the blood of Jesus shed for us. Jesus has tied a "scarlet cord" over our lives and nothing or no one can ever harm you or take you out of His hand. No sin or personal struggles has a say. You are safe and secure in Him. You belong to Him.

May.
