What actually is presumption? As we all know, it came from the word presume and according to an online dictionary, to presume is to take for granted that something is true. Many times, we tend to take many things for granted and if we are not careful, one of the many things can be God's grace. There is always a danger to presume God's grace especially when we indulge in any particular sin. We come to God each time we sin like it's one of our "forgive me" list but we never walk away from it each time temptation comes. And trust me, the more we give in to temptation, the more we presume that God will always forgive when we ask. God's grace becomes like a green card to sin instead and Paul pointed out this truth when he wrote Romans 6. "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?" (Romans 6:1).
Stucked in presuming God's grace, we will be in the danger of forgetting the price that Jesus had to pay on the cross for our sins. The Israelites suffered the consequences of presuming that God's presence would be with them when the actual fact was the Lord was not with them to battle yet. (Numbers 14:39-45). Although we know that God has promised to forgive (1 John 1:9), knowing the gospel brings responsibility too (Hebrews 2:1). We need to build ourselves on the Word of God and what it says about sins that we struggle with. Each time temptation comes, use His Word to overcome and do not presume His grace. We have a choice to stay in sin or to be the overcomers that we are. "Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us" (Romans 8:37). And know that God's purpose of exposing our sins is not to condemn us but to save us. (John 3:17). It is done at the cross and sin no longer has its hold.
